Users Coming Off Anti-Obesity Injections Regain Pounds at a Quadrupled Rate Than People Using Diet and Exercise

Obesity treatment involves ongoing approaches.

New research suggests that individuals who stop using blockbuster slimming jabs like semaglutide or tirzepatide may regain reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt conventional diet and exercise programs.

Published data in a leading medical journal shows that while obese individuals can lose about a fifth of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the weight returns at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.

"Users using such drugs must be informed of the risk of rapid rebound weight gain when the medication ends," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of recovery suggests a return to starting mass in about 18 months.

Comparing Treatments

The study, which examined 37 of trials involving thousands of participants, compared the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.

Researchers note that people who shed pounds through dieting generally experience a more gradual weight regain—around 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.

Explaining the Quick Regain

Nutrition scientists believe the way of the jabs explains the accelerated rebound.

The injections imitate a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate appetite.

"Sustained high doses of the hormone concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production may cause the body to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and could reduce sensitivity to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.

"Stopping of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to appetite is unsuppressed, making binge eating far more likely."

An Ongoing Issue?

Health authorities suggest the injections for people with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

Professionals contend that, given the high risk of weight regain, the treatment should be considered life-long.

This perspective is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the findings "underscore the persistent nature of obesity," akin to managing conditions like high blood pressure.

Patient Accounts

Users who have discontinued the medication explain a intense return of cravings.

"I experienced something activating and I was suddenly starving," described an individual.

The struggle is exacerbated if individuals have not developed sustainable dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.

Significant Adoption

Figures suggest that a significant number of people in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with desire being substantial.

  • Adoption is greater among females than males.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest usage rates.
  • Many obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Ultimately, researchers caution that while these medications are effective agents for weight loss, they are not a permanent solution and maintained weight loss likely depends on combined behavioural changes.
