A deadly railway accident in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel opposition criticisms regarding the rapidity and handling of the country's major infrastructure initiatives.
The crash took place on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a rail link constructed to link the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was intended to provide an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving economic development in the area.
“We will meticulously determine what caused this incident,” declared the head of state.
The president announced that, of the some 250 passengers on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in grave condition. The leader stated plans to go to Oaxaca to speak with those affected.
Major Initiative of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a signature public works project of the former leader, whose term finished the prior year. This rail line was intimately linked to his government's economic agenda for the southeastern region.
Another massive rail project from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the wider plan to stimulate the economic fortunes of a relatively less developed part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Safety Concerns
The development of both rail lines was supervised by the nation's military, marking a significant increase of its responsibilities in civilian infrastructure. They were completed at an accelerated speed, defying forecasts to be at least partly opened before the end of that administration.
However, this fast-paced schedule had also raised significant concerns over construction quality.
- Sunday's crash was the third event on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
- This includes an prior accident this month when a train struck a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced several non-deadly derailments.
Demands for Investigation and Halt
In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the head of a primary political opposition called for an urgent suspension in the construction and operation of all comparable projects.
This stoppage was requested pending a comprehensive independent investigation. The party emphasized that the tragedy "requires swift accountability."
In reply, the head of state insisted that the train had been functioning in full adherence to all operational standards. Commitments were given that the government would be "diligent" in both the construction and management of these national undertakings.
